I figure
that any culture that understand pure entertainment well enough
to produce a high action, funny, and romantic film has got
to be worth pursuing. The US has taken over a decade to come
to appreciate these films for what they are. |

The director's
cut of this film is long, roasting a turkey long. It's forgiveable
given the care with which is was produced. It makes its American
countepart look quaint. Characterization is slim (probably
hampered by my not understanding a word of German), but the
apologia of film works for me. 11/00 |

One of
the great John Woo gangster movies from Hong Kong. If you
want to see how a gunfight should be filmed, this should be
your bible. The comparison of the assassin versus the police
is unexpected in this genre, and the characterization of "youth
= evil" is hilarious (a very Asian conceit). Now, if
someone could explain why the lead character's name is translated
as "Jeffrey," you have my respect. 03/01 |

Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are the perfect combination, and their chemistry helps to make the lulls between the action sequences, normally the death knell of action films, equally entertaining. The outtakes are fantastic, as are the explanations of how action sequences were planned and executed 01/02 |

Nicely
crafted, but ultimately lacrimose and pro-war. Hollywood is
still old-fashioned that way, I guess. |
