The "Dimsum Circuit" in the South Bay
My friend Michael (also Japanese-American) go to dimsum almost every Sunday. Here's our usual haunts for dimsum in the South Bay. The restaurants listed below are in no particular order except the frequency we visit them.

Restaurant Pros Cons Wait for a table*
Pan Tao
1686 S. Wolfe
Sunnyvale, CA 94087
Dependable, big selection, food is hot, and there are lots of special dishes if you go during rush hour. Carts circle continuously. Excellent service.

Parking is horrendous (try the dentist office next door or the street). Salt & pepper shrimp have thick shells. Siu mai just okay.

10 mins.
Has tables for two.
Mayflower
Great Mall location

222 Great Mall Dr
Milpitas, CA 95035
(near Marshalls)
Dependable. Chef has been trying out new, fusion-y dishes on our last few visits, e.g., seafood mayonaise rolls with canned fruit. Um... People who shop at the Great Mall drive like maniacs. Good cart service, but they can take awhile to get around to you. 0-5 mins.
Has tables for two.
Canton Delight
10125 Bandley Dr.
Cupertino, CA 95014
Managers circle with special dishes straight from the kitchen. Serves unusual desserts. Selection is more limited than larger restaurants. 0-5 mins.
Has tables for two.
Dynasty Chinese Seafood
1001 Story Rd. Ste #200, San Jose, CA 95122
Food is again dependable if not particularly interesting. Large selection of BBQ meats, which I always get pushed on me if I go with white people. Awesome staircase! Parking is crazy on weekends. Be sure to stop by the larger part of the mall, especially the food court. 0-5 mins.
Very few tables for two, but there usually isn't a capacity crowd even on weekends.
Mayflower Ulferts location
428 Barber Lane Milpitas, CA 95035
Dependable but seems dull compared to other restaurants Can be busy on the weekends (nothing like Hong Kong Flower though) 15 mins.
Some tables for two.
Ming's
1700 Embarcadero Rd.
Palo Alto, CA 94303
I only really go here because they have a lot of kiddie desserts, like little rabbits made from custard and super soft mochi. The rest of the food is so-so. Kind of a hike from San Jose. Kind of expensive. 0-5 mins.
Has a few tables for two.

* Wait times are estimates for a party of two. For a party of four or more, add 5-10 mins.

I Am Not a Wedding Planner, but here are some recommendations...

Updated July 2004 - I received yet another note from a visitor looking for a banquet hall for a wedding. Since a) I'm gay, and b) I haven't been invited to a wedding banquet recently, here's all I can offer in terms of advice.

The following restaurants have nice to very nice interiors and most have separate banquet rooms.

Joy Luck (Cupertino)
Multi-story restaurant. I think you can rent out the entire top floor.

Hong Kong Flower (Milbrae)
Huge restaurant in the Cupertino shopping center at Wolfe and Homestead.
