I decided to remove the rest of the broken glass
from the convertible top (little pieces get stuck in the joints
and make a horrendous cracking sound if they get stuck in the
mechanism.
I stopped the top halfway and pulled out the pieces. When
I was done, i hit the button to lower the top. Nothing. The
convertible top was stuck halfway, about 6" from the windshield.
The odd thing was that the tonneau cover (the hard plastic
part that seals the top in its compartment when the top is
lowered, was still pointing straight up (actually it was leaning
against the rear edge of the cloth top.

I went through the following procedures, since this has happened
before:
1. Tried shutting down the car and starting up again. Didn't
work.
2. Tried pushing the little button behind the backseat armrest
to release the top. Didn't work.
3. Tried cranking the top down. Worked, but the tonneau cover
was still pointing up.
4. Tried cranking the top up. Worked, but after moving a few
inches, the tiny allen wrench I was using become impossible
to turn and spun around like it was on a spring after I let
it go.
5. Tried hauling the back part of the top using brute force.
Budged about 1/16" then snapped back into place.
6. Tried closing the top by turning the key in the driver's
side door AND holding the tonneau cover as far back as it would
go (you have to press firmly). Voila! Worked like a charm.
I wish I had a picture of what this looked like. Basically,
the problem was that the rear part of the top continued to
close even though the tonneau cover hadn't seated itself correctly.
There is no mention of this trick in the owner's manual.
